NYC Chapter: Simple Switch Build

This exciting switch event is being organized and run by our New York City Chapter.

With only a few 3D-printed parts, a microcontroller, and some open-source code you can change someone’s life. Join the Makers Making Change NY Chapter in partnership with Zero Day Camp for this free, virtual build event! Learn about the exciting world of D.I.Y. assistive technology through this hands-on Simple Switch build event.

About the Build and Lending Library

We are developing a lending library of DIY Assistive Technology and need your help to create our starting inventory. This build will create our inventory of raindrop and light-touch switches in order to loan out to AT users here in NYC. If you are building this switch, we ask that you mail back the completed switch using the provided mailing label so we may add the device to our inventory.

About the Raindrop Switch:

This is a cost-effective 3D printable accessibility switch. The switch is 32 mm L x 22 mm W x 9 mm H and uses a standard 3.5 mm cable. Using the model of tactile switch specified, the activation force is about 1.3 N (130 gf). This switch is comparable in size, activation force, and travel to the AbleNet Mini Cup Switch. The switch is well-suited for use by a finger. This switch can be plugged into any standard 3.5 mm AT interface. It can also be used with the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Multiple switches can be used to get input from more than one finger. The switch can be mounted using adhesive on the rear surface.

About the Light Touch Switch:

This is a cost-effective 3D printable accessibility switch based on an initial design by Kevin Cross. The switch is 50 mm L x 18 mm W x 15 mm H and uses a standard 3.5 mm cable. Using the specified model of a tactile switch, the activation force is 0.3 – 0.4 N (30-40 gf). The switch is well-suited for use by a finger. This switch can be plugged into any standard AT interface. It can also be used with the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Multiple switches can be used to get input from more than one finger. The original design is also available in a dual side-by-side version.

Equipment Needed:

• Soldering iron
• Hot glue gun

When registering, please indicate which switch (or both) and if you require: just the components (you are able to print your own 3D prints and have the components), 3D parts and components (you do not have access to a printer), or neither if you have both components and printer or just want to watch. Once registered, you will receive a link for the online meeting about a week before.
