Is the button a press on / press off button?  If so I wonder if it would be OK to turn it on and then control the on/off with a switch in the base controlling the battery.  That way there might be no need to send the existing wand back and forth in the mail.  I would print up one of the bases and a thin shim to add the switch into the battery compartment.
