    # 3D Printed Switch Camera Mount Adapters

    Commercial mounting solutions for switches can be quite expensive. These mounting adapters connect to a switch and provide a 1/4″-20 UNC thread that can be used with standard camera mounts, which are readily available and cost-effective.

    ## Threads
    The vast majority of cameras have a threaded hole in the bottom for mounting to tripods and other mounting options. The type of thread is 1/4″-20 UNC.

    ### Tee Nuts
    The majority of 3D printed switch camera mount adapters use tee nuts to provide a secure, durable threaded connection that is cost-effective. While they are typically used for adding threads to wood, they also work well with 3D prints. Tee nuts can be purchased locally at hardware stores or online. Note that they come in several different heights, so make sure to check that what you are purchasing matches the design. Many of the designs have multiple versions for use with the standard heights (i.e. 5/16″, 7/16″, and 9/16″).

    Tee nuts are easily installed using a 1/4″-20 UNC bolt or screw and a matching screwdriver or wrench, and a washer (optional but recommended) to pull them into the 3D printed part.     ### Brass Heat-Set Inserts
    Brass heat-set inserts are another option for providing a threaded connection and are designed for insertion into plastic. They have the advantage of taking up less space and can be cost-effective, though unlike tee nuts, are not typically available locally or in small quantities. They can be tricky to insert: achieving good results is dependent on skill or additional equipment, and mistakes can ruin a 3D print.

    ### Hex Nuts
    Standard hex nuts are another common method for adding threads to 3D printed parts, but aren’t typically used for camera mount adapters. Unlike tee nuts and brass heat-set inserts that provide a flush threaded connection, using hex nuts typically involves a small gap between the mounting surface and the start of the threads. Since the threaded studs on tripod mounts are so short, this can make it difficult to get a strong connection.
