Image describing the mouse or thumbstick controller can be replaced by a joystick

Introduction

This resource has been created to aid in comparing both open source and commercial options of analog joysticks. These joysticks may be used for gaming or computer access. The tables below allow users to compare the price, switch access options, the option of interchangeable toppers, and the type of connection to devices.

Criteria Explanation

The following is a breakdown of the different features that an analog joystick may present.

Analog vs Digital

Joysticks fall into two categories, analog and digital. Digital joysticks allow the user only to input four directions (i.e., up, down, left, and right) or eight directions (i.e., up, down, left, right, and 4 diagonals). Analog joysticks allow inputs in all directions and map the full range of motion of the joystick in its given position. Analog joysticks allow for slight movement to be detected rather than an “on and off” type of response that digital joysticks have.

USB vs TRRS

Joysticks can connect to systems through either a TRRS cable or a USB cable. It is important for users to know which connection a joystick uses to ensure that it will work with the given system they will be using. For use with computers, laptops, or mobile devices, a USB cable connection is required. The Xbox Adaptive Controller can accept both USB and TRRS connections.

Integrated Buttons/Switch Access

Some joysticks will include options for adaptive switch access. Adaptive switches can be added to the joystick to potentially control actions in the game or use keyboard and mouse inputs. If a joystick in the lists below is noted as having “integrated buttons” the switches are attached to the joystick permanently. If a joystick in the lists below includes “switch access” this means that the joystick has 3.5 mm jacks for connecting assistive switches.

Number of Buttons and Switch Jacks

This is the number of integrated buttons on the design as well as the number of 3.5 mm switch jack ports. Commercial and DIY assistive switches that have a 3.5 mm connection can be attached to 3.5 mm switch jacks.

Interchangeable Toppers

Interchangeable toppers allow users or clinicians to be able to swap the top of the joystick easily. Some joysticks have permanent shapes of their toppers that can not be taken off and would not classify under this category. Interchangeable toppers can be very useful for different joystick uses and further customization for the user.

Open Source Analog Joysticks Options

The analog joystick options below all are open-source options. You can build them yourself or with a friend (i.e., DIY, DIT) or submit a request through the Makers Making Change site to connect with a volunteer maker to have it made for you (requestors are responsible for covering the cost of materials and any shipping).
