Device Details
This project was designed as an affordable mounting solution that could be easily repositioned to support a proximity sensor for a child with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It uses a clamshell design to position a 1/4″- 20 UNC screw at the end of a commercially-available twist tie (NiteIze Mega GearTie). The 1/4″-20 UNC screw is also compatible with cameras and may be used with other assistive switches using an appropriate adapter.
The hex mount consists of two halves that are fastened around the end(s) of a flexible twist tie.The twist tie can then be wrapped around a chair, table, bed, or other surface for temporary mounting. For permanent mounting, an optional base can be printed to secure the cable to a flat surface. The flexible twist tie can be cut in half or secured midway along its length to allow for mounting options at both ends of the twist tie.
3D COMPONENTS
The two halves of the Mega Twist Tie Hex Mount.stl file can be printed upright with supports so that the half-circle openings for the twist tie are in contact with the build plate. The piece can also be printed without supports if it is rotated so that the flat interiors are positioned on the base plate. These two pieces were printed in PLA at 0.15mm resolution with 10{039027a8d5ea1dbe724edad0fccf57f8ce2cb2ddf838a89881538f69f8f20e70} infill.
The Mega Mount Base.stl file is printed in PLA at 0.15mm and 10{039027a8d5ea1dbe724edad0fccf57f8ce2cb2ddf838a89881538f69f8f20e70} infill. The piece is oriented so that the wide base is flat on the build plate.
HARDWARE
To secure the two halves of the hex mount, use three M2x0.4 x 8 mm length screws (or M2x0.4 x 10 mm length) and M2 hex nuts.
The top of this mount holds a ¼”-20 UNC x ⅝” length hex head machine screw to attach devices.
The optional mounting base is screwed directly to a permanent surface. Four holes are provided for use with M4 or #8 screws.
